Observing the Aurora
Aurorae are, in the popular imagination, almost synonymous with the polar regions. Countless books have appeared over the years covering the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic and, subsequently, on their wildlife. The aurora receives frequentmention and illustration in such texts. Clear descriptions of auroral substorm activity can be found, for example, in the writings of the late-nineteenth century Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen:
