Abstract
This discussion addresses the use of silence (pauses) in discourse as a mechanism to provide turn-taking cues to the user of a voice-activated service. The location and duration of silence are defined and tested for a typical application, voice controlled voice mail. Usability studies were performed in numerous European countries, as well as in the United States to validate the dialog model. Target values for silence locations and durations were found to be consistent across numerous languages and cultures.
