In our earlier general discussion on sources of error in precision machines we referred to Figure 2.4, which described the various sources and their inter-relationship with the mechanical system components and the resulting impact on part accuracy. In this chapter we address specifically thermal errors which are “the largest single source of errors in close tolerance work.” In fact, some place thermal errors at some 40% of the machine tool errors.
