Samples of Classes II & III

Part of the Astronomers' Observing Guides book series (OBSERVING)

While the author has long promoted the merits of dropping the objects contained in Herschel’s Class II (faint nebulae) and Class III (very faint nebulae) to arrive at a manageable target list for prospective Herschel Club members, it will be admitted that there are a few (a very few!) objects in those two classes that – while not showpieces in the normal sense of the word – are still fascinating telescopic targets for one reason or another. (While on the subject of celestial showpieces, the author has spent more than 50 years surveying the sky for its visual treasures with hundreds of different sizes, types and makes of telescopes – one fruit of which is the book Celestial Harvest: 300-Plus Showpieces of the Heavens for Telescope Viewing and Contemplation, which was reprinted by Dover Publications in 2002.)
