Abstract
The past 50 years have witnessed the most spectacular period of growth and development of vascular surgery during its long and fascinating history. As in all matters, the basis for today’s modern vascular surgery rests on achievements from the past. As Thomas Carlyle said, “History is the essence of innumerable biographies.”
