Abstract
Rane Brake Linings (RBL) is a manufacturing company, located in India, that epitomizes the dramatic transformation in manufacturing that is currently occurring in the Indian industry. RBL’s journey to win the Deming prize in 2003 required organizational and procedural changes whose impact is seen in the way they deal with both managing supply costs and managing customer service upstream and downstream in the supply chain. Today, RBL is one of thirteen Deming prize winning Indian manufacturing companies. RBL’s transformation, in the Indian context, suggests an approach to develop a globally competitive manufacturing firm by developing superior management processes.
