Gamma Ray Imaging Probes for Radioguided Surgery and Site-Directed Biopsy

  • Chapter
Radioguided Surgery

Abstract

The imaging probe is a small field-of-view, portable, handheld, high-resolution gamma ray detector that aids the surgeon in finding specific targets either to be removed in the surgical field (such as sentinel lymph nodes or occult tumor lesions) or to be localized for transcutaneous needle biopsies (suspect lesions). High-resolution detectors can be defined as gamma cameras with spatial resolution better than 4 mm, which is the lower limit of the intrinsic resolution of Anger cameras. Radioguided surgery requires rapid and precise detection, as is generally (but not always) provided by simple probes with acoustic signaling, which will be referred to here as simple probes. Imaging probes are useful when intraoperative images help surgeons address small, sometimes deep, structures that have to be removed, and functional imaging also sometimes aids in precise guidance of a biopsy needle for x-ray-detected lesions. High-resolution images provided by imaging probes are useful in these instances, although some are not strictly surgical acts.
