Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the Western world, accounting for more cancer deaths than the next 4 most frequent cancers combined. In the year 2000, the worldwide incidence of non-small cell lung cancer was close to 1,000,000 cases; in 2004, there were approximately 174,000 cases of lung cancer in the United States alone, resulting in more than 160,000 deaths (1). The overall low 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with lung cancer (15%) is especially discouraging. Such poor long-term survival is probably related to the fact that early-stage disease is asymptomatic, and thus the onset of symptoms marks the presence of advanced, mostly incurable disease.
