Biomaterials used in the surgical treatment of bone fractures are discussed in this chapter. For a fracture to heal properly, the bone ends must be aligned and stabilized. Stabilization may be accomplished externally, as with a cast, or internally (surgically), with screws, plates, pins, or rods.
