Abstract
This paper describes HATS, a system for the generation of context sensitive help for interactive applications. HATS delivers help based on a hierarchy of tasks the user can perform. As the user interacts with the application and accomplishes the tasks, the help messages are updated automatically, and give him context sensitive information about the actions needed to accomplish the desired task, including graphical references to the places in the application window where the tasks can be performed. HATS includes a reduced environment that simplifies the design of the help system.
