Part of the book series: New ICMI Study Series ((NISS,volume 10))

Abstract

The first section of the discussion document, “Rationale for the Study” (Blum et al., 2002), mentions on the one hand that there exists a lot of works in mathematics education centered on applications and modelling and, on the other hand, that these works have had little effect on what happens in classrooms. The purpose of the present paper is to propose some explanations of this phenomenon by considering conditions for modelling to exist in mathematics classrooms.
