Abstract

Meridiani Planum overlies the ancient cratered terrain of Arabia Terra. A study by Brian Hynek, Raymond Arvidson and Roger Phillips of Washington University in St Louis interpreted it as a blanket of pyroclastic several hundred metres thick. The appearance of the craters on the plain suggested that they are either being rapidly eroded or have been buried and are in the process of being exhumed. In 1998 the thermal emission spectrometer on Mars Global Surveyor identified the signature of grey hematite on a particularly flat section of this high plain.
