Infant and Preschool Methods

  • Randy W. Kamphaus

Infant and preschool measures, which are usually associated with the age range of 1 year to 6 years, differ from other intelligence tests in scope. Infant measures in particular are usually multidimensional. Infant tests, for example, frequently assess cognitive and motor domains simultaneously. The McCarthy Scales of Children’s Abilities (McCarthy, 1972), for example, is designed for ages 2 1/2 through 8 and includes a motor domain. Motor domains are even more common for infant measures. Some measures also assess behavioral, temperamental, and emotional status. The Battelle Developmental Inventory (Newborg, Stock, Wnek, Guidubaldi, & Svinicki, 1984) is a broad-based diagnostic measure that assesses personal-social, adaptive, motor, communication, and cognitive skills.
