Abstract
Reasonable answers could involve the powerful and important applications of the derivative (e.g., to real-world maximum/minimum problems). But these applications are as yet unjustified by us: if the derivative of a polynomial is useful, we can compute it, but nothing so far shows that it is useful. We turn to results underlying (some of) the applications.
