Lichens and Air Pollution in the Forests Surrounding Mexico City

  • Chapter
Urban Air Pollution and Forests

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 156))

Abstract

Very little is known about the lichens of the Basin of Mexico. Lichenologists are just starting to systematically analyze the local lichen flora and communities. Anyone familiar with lichens would, however, recognize in these communities signs of decline resembling the lichen impoverishment reported for many polluted areas throughout the world. This is especially apparent at Sierra de las Cruces, the nearest forested area SSW of Mexico City, where lichens are very scarce compared to similar areas farther away from the city.
