Abstract
The 26th edition of Stedman’s Medical Dictionary offers the following definitions:
Adaptation: an advantageous change in function or constitution of an organ or tissue to meet new conditions (p. 23).
Compensation: term used to describe a process in which a tendency for a change in a given direction is counteracted by another change so that the original change is not evident (p. 372).
Decompensation: a failure of compensation (in heart disease) (p. 445).
