Abstract
This chapter introduces the mathematics used in this book. It covers some of the main notions in the calculus of variations and the theory of viscosity solutions. It is introductory and we tried to made it as self contained as possible. A careful reading is advised to better understand the coming analysis. The prerequisite for this chapter is a good course in advanced calculus.
