Abstract
Health professionals encounter computers in many settings. In more and more hospitals, physicians and nurses can order drugs and laboratory tests, review test results, and record medical observations using a hospital information system. Most hospitals and outpatient clinics have computers to help them manage financial and administrative information. Many physicians in private practice have purchased personal computers to allow them to access and search the medical literature, to communicate with colleagues, and to help their office staff with tasks such as billing and word processing.
