Lung Cancer Metastatic to Other Body Sites

  • Chapter
Color Atlas of Pulmonary Cytopathology

Abstract

Lung cancers spread widely to local and distant organs. The tumors disseminate (1) by contiguous growth to the adjacent tissues and organs (e.g., hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes, pleura, esophagus, thyroid, chest wall); (2) within the lung parenchyma by extension into the contiguous air spaces, along interstitial and submucosal planes, and intraluminally along the airways; (3) to distant organs via lymphatics and blood vessels; and (4) by pleural seeding.
