Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the second leading cause of cancer mortality in western countries. Approximately 6% of the population will develop CRC during their lifetime (Neuhaus 1999). The majority of colon cancers develop from nonmalignant adenomas or polyps (O’Brien et al. 1990). Thus, cancer screening programs targeting precancerous polyps with subsequent endoscopic polypectomy could significantly reduce the incidence and hence the mortality of CRC.
