Cataract Surgery in the Glaucoma Patient

Exfoliation syndrome (XFS) was first described in 1917 by the Finnish ophthalmologist John Lindberg1 and currently affects 60–70 million people worldwide.2–4 Of these, 15–17 million have increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and 5–6 million are estimated to suffer from exfoliative glaucoma (XFG), a form of secondary open-angle glaucoma that develops as a consequence of XFS and is considered the most common identifiable cause of open-angle glaucoma worldwide.2 Its aggressive course and worldwide prevalence makes it critical for ophthalmologists to be familiar with the full clinical spectrum of the disease.
