Abstract
Partner abuse during pregnancy is a global health problem. In their review of the literature, Nasir and Hyder (2003) found that the prevalence of partner violence against pregnant women in developing nations ranged from 4% to 29%. For example, in a study of 600 randomly selected pregnant women in India, Purwar, et al. (1999) discovered that 22% of the women reported physical abuse during pregnancy. Based on a study of 488 women in Leon, Nicaragua, Ellsberg, Pena and Herrera, et al. (2000) showed that 31% of the women had ever experienced physical abuse during pregnancy. In their investigation of 207 pregnant Swedish women, Hedin and Janson (2000) revealed that 4.3% of the pregnant women had been exposed to serious abuse.
