Abstract

Suicidal behavior includes a range of behaviors, ranging from suicidal ideation (thinking about suicide) through attempted suicide of varying levels of medical seriousness which the individual survives, to completed suicide where the individual dies. Recent scholarly writing on attempted suicide has questioned whether many of those attempting suicide have any intent to die. Because suicidal intent is often difficult to determine, the terms “parasuicide” and “deliberate self-harm” have become common terms for attempted suicide.
