Abstract
Connections between religious groups and violence are widespread in history and in contemporary societies, but have only recently begun to receive systematic attention by social scientists (Candland, 1992). This oversight is due, in part, to what Edward Shils called “the blindness of the social sciences to tradition” (1981:14). Parochialism within the disciplines of theology and religious studies, and social scientific paradigms which assumed secularization and the Western separation of “church” and “state”, have obscured the complex interactions between religious traditions and political and social activism, including the abilities of religious groups and members to inspire, legitimize, enact, and prevent violence.
