Abstract
Business planning is a well-established activity in other industries but is relatively new process for health service providers. Business planning was introduced to healthcare organizations in the 1980s when the industry was being transformed into its “modern” form. Due to increased competition and a more volatile environment, healthcare organizations needed to behave more like businesses, and this meant adopting business practices long common in other industries. Prior to this time, business planning activities had been restricted to more “retail” oriented healthcare entities (e.g., pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies).
