Abstract
Alcohol was brought to the English colonies with the very first settlers. Brewing in the colonies similarly occurred early in colonial history. For instance, the first brewery in North America was established in 1612 in New York (Smith, 1998). At the time, alcohol was used as a medicinal remedy for such ailments as headaches and infections (Murdock, 1998) and as a commercial asset in trading with the Indians (Mancall, 1995). Colonial indulgence of alcohol was heavy by current standards, averaging approximately seven shots a day. Alcohol was regarded as an essential part of one’s diet in terms of its nutritional and caloric contributions (Heather and Robertson, 2000).
