Abstract
It is a commonplace that children are the future of society. This basic assumption can be incorporated into different approaches: investment in children as human capital, disciplining of children to guarantee social order, educating children as citizens. In bourgeois societies these mostly take place at the same time. As a result religious, voluntary and state organizations have a long history of intervening in children’s lives. This has led to a systematization of interest in, and responsibility for, children. Paradoxically, though, such systematization has resulted in concerns which often fail to incorporate specific, real living children and the needs they might have articulated if there had been anybody listening to their voices.
