Abstract

A group of scientists put five monkeys in a cage, at the center of which they placed a ladder with a bunch of bananas hanging above. When one of the monkeys climbed the ladder to get at the bananas, the scientists sprayed the others with cold water. After a while, whenever a monkey tried to climb the ladder, the others would drag it back down and beat it. In the end, none of them would dare climb the ladder, despite the temptation of the bananas. Then, the scientists replaced one of the monkeys.

The battlefield is also accordingly here — within ourselves and our institutions.

John Dewey, philosopher (1859–1952)
