Abstract

I had two aims in writing this book. The first was to explore the effects that disability has on non-disabled people, both as individuals and in the social context. Reported experiences of disabled and non-disabled people indicate that disability tends to trigger conscious or unconscious fear and anxiety, which often leads to overt or covert prejudices. Therefore a prerequisite for practitioners intending to work with disabled people is to identity and acknowledge their own defensive reactions to and prejudices about disability.
