Abstract

Hippocrates (460–377 bc) was the first person to recognize epilepsy as an organic process of the brain. Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological disorder (Frost and Laville, 1998), yet no other is as misinterpreted and misunderstood (Royal College of Nursing [RCN], 1995). As well as being a common medical condition it carries a considerable social stigma (Goodridge and Shorvon, 1983). People with epilepsy have to cope with problems in almost every sphere of their lives (RCN, 1995).
