Abstract

This chapter sets the scene exploring therapy in the postmodern world. It then considers why spirituality and spiritual experiences remain a taboo within the therapy world, the rise of therapy as a secular activity, the legacy of Freud, the decline of traditional religion and the reality of human spirituality.

The separation, if not opposition, between psychoanalysis and religion is the essence of the naturalistic explanations of psychoanalysis. Religion is nonadmissible given its assumptions of transcendence and theology.
