Abstract
Herein is presented a review of the content of the chapters written by specialists from different institutions in Russia, Uzbekistan, France, Germany, and USA, devoted to different aspects of the Aral Sea problem – from paleohistory and archaeology of the Aral Sea region, to the present physical, chemical, and biological state of the sea, analysis of the Amudarya and Syrdarya river runoff and their deltas, description of regional climate change, as well as discussion of socio-economic conditions in the Aral Sea regions and reasons for the environmental and socio-economic crisis.
