Characterization and performance of single- and multistage tower reactors with outer loop for cell mass production

Abstract

There is a need to develop more and better methods to characterize cultivation media and bioreactors.

The present paper reviews these methods using the example of cultivations of Hansenula poly-morpha and Escherichia coli in bench-scale tower loop reactors under different operational conditions. The influence of medium properties, construction parameters, and process variables on the oxygen transfer rate and cell productivity are considered.

Though in the present state experimental data evaluated up to now are not sufficient enough to recommend general procedure for the layout, design, and scale-up of these bioreactors, some quantitative relationships are considered in this review also.
