Electroluminescence

Part of the book series: Topics in Applied Physics ((TAP,volume 17))

Abstract

The expectation that chalcopyrite support electroluminescence at near-band-gap energies has been borne out by the diodes prepared to date. Experience accumulated with these devices also points to the need for more detailed knowledge of, and more precise control over, material and electronic properties. Further work on electroluminescence and other applications, as well as fundamental studies, will lead to the comprehensive understanding indispensable for commercial exploitation. Of course, a more concerted development effort can be expected once a chalcopyrite is found to perform better than its binary counterpart. Development of such alternatives is the principal task of today's chalcopyrite device research.
