Abstract

The question is examined as to whether surfactants are aggregated or not in some nonaqueous systems commonly referred to as micellar solutions and microemulsions. The surfactant used is sodium dodecyl sulphate which is investigated both in a polar solvent and in three- and four-component solutions of surfactant, polar solvent, alcohol (pentanol-octanol) and hydrocarbon. The polar solvents used are formamide, N-methylformamide and N,N′-dimethylformamide. Solution structure and molecular organisation are investigated by multi-component self-diffusion studies (Fourier transform NMR spin-echo technique) and multi-field 2H NMR relaxation. From a comparison with the analogous aqueous systems it is found that the segregation into polar and nonpolar domains as well as the degree of self-association is much less (and often insignificant) m the nonaqueous systems.
