Abstract

Through a competition to integrate art into the design of the Fulton Street Center, James Carpenter Design Associates went a step further by collaborating with architects, Grimshaw & Partners, New York, to articulate light throughout their design. The master plan for the MTA Downtown Transit Center calls for the new Fulton Subway Station to be linked to the new World Trade Center Path Station by a cross-town subterranean pedestrian passageway. Significantly, the Fulton Street Transit Center establishes a new identity for the transit system in which light and daylight are a signatory element.
