Abstract

This paper describes the contributions to scale-space research by Utrecht University over the period 1989–1995. Starting with work on the fundamental basis of scale-space from causality and first principles, the relation between scale and differentiation of numerical data is found to be crucial. The main lines of research are discussed: (high order) differential and algebraic invariant image structure, relations between order, scale, noise and accuracy of Gaussian derivatives, deep structure of scale-space and the ‘hyperstack’, multiscale optic flow and nonlinear diffusion. Most applications are in medical imaging. An overview of current activities and bibliography concludes the paper.
