Hanging by Two Threads: The Evolution of Intelligent Tutoring Systems Research

Conference paper
Part of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science book series (LNCS, volume 1452)

This paper will present a view that, although the continual development of new information and communication technologies means that it is always dawn for ITS designers, what holds the ITS field together as a coherent, significant research activity are two threads which have been important from the beginning of ITS research and which will become increasingly so. These threads are (1) the recognition that tutors (human or otherwise) should ‘care’ about learners and (2) the realisation that ITS research is uniquely placed to add scientific precision to the educational process.
