Abstract
The Java programming language has enjoyed great success in a variety of applications that include but are not limited to downloadable applets within the World Wide Web. Nevertheless, there have been some proposals for change. Would they be improvements? We present a sample range of current and future applications and then discuss the motivation, advantages, and disadvantages of a number of proposed changes. We also discuss some ways in which improved implementation techniques are likely to be important in the near future.
