Abstract

The definition of a new IN SSM has demonstrated to be the key issue for successfully enhancing the set of traditional IN capabilities with those needed to support broadband multimedia services. In fact, the object orientation of the SSM has allowed the definition of generic Information Flows able to address operations on the objects. Moreover, the SSM design permits to model the new signalling capabilities available in a SSP by simply enriching the SSM with new attributes and relationships.

The identified Information Flows are only a subset of all the meaningful combination of low level SSM object transitions. In fact, the transitions needed to control the evolution of a generic IN service typically involve operations on a group of related objects. The identified Information Flows are service independent and hence allow to provide a large variety of services. Moreover, a unique service logic is needed whatever the signalling capability set is. This has been achieved by introducing at IN level the concept of service session. The session concept is very useful to correlate the different connections belonging to a single service instance.
