Response of the Nuclear System to External Forces

Part of the book series: Lecture Notes in Physics ((LNP,volume 441))

Abstract

Some open problems in the fields of high-spin physics and exotic shapes are considered. We discuss pairing properties, octupole effects and the possibility for high-K isomers in superdeformed nuclei, as well as the posible existence of hyperdeformed nuclei. Clustering effects in very light nuclei leading to the formation of α-string nuclei, and effects of heavy di-nuclear systems are also discussed. The deformation degree of freedom for some halo nuclei is stressed.
