Abstract
Resource Allocation for variable bit rate video traffic is still a crucial problem due to the complex traffic characteristics of compressed video. This paper presents the results of a traffic study showing the effect of video contents on the bandwidth needed by interactive multimedia applications to transfer video in a loss-free context. Mpeg compression has been applied to four movies with different characteristics. Useful statistics on the VBR traffic are presented. Probability density functions are drawn and discussed. The network bandwidth needed for each sequence is drawn as a function of the application interactivity. Our main results show that for moderately interactive applications, the real time property costs very low while it is dramatically expensive for highly interactive applications. We also prove that the bandwidth required by a video sequence depends strongly on the scene contents and vary with a ratio up to 3.5.
