Abstract
The standard picture of radio sources, in which a steady jet supplies the extended lobes with energy and mass, predicts distributions of source properties which contradict observations. The most dramatic contradiction is the non-detection of the large numbers of steep spectrum sources predicted by the theory. It seems to be time for a new approach to the basic source model.
