Abstract

With the advent of fast, large memory supercomputers such as the Cray 2, it is now possible to investigate the dynamics of extragalactic radio sources in three dimensions. In this contribution, results from two simulations are presented which use the equations of ideal MHD to model extragalactic radio sources. Among other things, these calculations reveal a simple hydrodynamical origin for the formation of total intensity filaments in the extended regions of well-resolved extragalactic radio sources, and point to important observational differences between extragalactic radio sources with active and passive magnetic fields.
