Abstract

Very long baseline interferometric observations of the SiO maser emission in evolved stars and in the star-forming region Orion A have been performed in Europe since 1990. We report on the progress in the analysis of the data and present some preliminary results. We find evidence for the existence of complex structures at milliarcsecond scales in the form of multiple maser spots distributed in the region. This is important for the understanding of the physical conditions close to the stellar photosphere and the SiO pumping mechanism. Repeated observations at several epochs should allow the modelling of the circumstellar envelope. We also discuss the suitability of the circumstellar SiO masers as a link between the optical and radio reference frames as they are bright radio sources and their parent stars are sometimes optically bright.
