Abstract

After a brief review of the numbers, colours and sizes of faint field galaxies, we discuss recent spectroscopic data which indicate that the steep blue counts of galaxies are caused by a rapidly evolving population of low mass galaxies which are responsible for an increase in the global star-formation rate in the Universe of a factor of three to five over a look-back time of the last few billion years. Various possibilities for explaining the present fate of these galaxies are discussed. Finally we explore some specific implications of these ideas on studies of various gravitational lens phenomena.
