Abstract
We show that the l dependence of the frequency variation between 1986 and 1988 reported by Libbrecht and Woodard (1990a,b) is useful to infer how deeply the outer layer of the sun has been changed in this period. Based on an asymptotic formula, we derive the l dependence of the frequency change in the case that the structural change is limited only in the region where the acoustic cut-off frequency dominates over the Lamb frequency. By comparing the formula with the observed l dependence of frequency variation, we set constraints the extent of the structural change in the outer layer of the sun in this period. We derive furthermore a formula to invert the frequency dependence of the frequency variation. By applying this formula to the observed frequency variation between 1986 and 1988, we conclude that the structural change in the outer layer of the sun in this period is confined within the hydrogen ionization zone and the layer 200 km below the photosphere.
