Abstract
Electrical double layers on rutile (TiO2) and haematite (α-Fe2O3) are studied thermodynamically. Surface charges and enthalpies of double layer formation, measured as a function of pH, salt concentration and temperature are the basic data. In the analysis, distinction is made between specific and generic observations. Consistent enthalpies of proton adsorption have been established. For the oxides mentioned, the electrical contribution to the enthalpy of double layer formation is negligibly small.
