On the functional and architectural integration of CASE systems

Abstract

Integration is a central and variously used term in discussions about CASE. This paper has examined the following aspects of integration: tool integration above common data storage, tool integration via a common user interface, and teamwork support (user integration) with a multi-user database. The last aspect in particular will in the future be the subject of much analysis, research and many developments, since most currently available CASE systems are especially weak in this area. At the same time, the expected developments and standardisation efforts in the field of object-oriented databases will further stimulate activity, since the object-oriented approach is clearly most appropriate for the CASE and server databases discussed here.
