Abstract

In a recent paper, a hybrid format called PPAM has been introduced. It differs from PPM by adding an extra symbol represented by no light at all time slots. In this communication the new format is analysed in the context of a photon-counting Poisson channel. Information theoretic concepts of capacity and cutoff-rate as well as the probability of error for uncoded data will be quantified. We conclude that to get advantage of the extra symbol, alphabet sizes should have a moderate value. Otherwise, PPAM becomes very similar to PPM.
